I've always had a fondness for the Austrian grenzers, to the extent of adding a couple of plastic units like these to my mainly metal army. I have since added a metal unit. I treat them as 'semi-lights', giving them a partial skirmishing capability - less than the jager, say, but more than the line infantry units.
I don't know how historical that is. For one thing, we don't know how closely such gentry clove to regulations...
I have a similar view I think they were better than the normal infantry, but not as good as they were in the SYW or in the fighting on the Turkish frontier
